William Smith to host annual tournament

GENEVA, N.Y.--The William Smith College tennis team will host its annual tournament this weekend at the HWS Tennis Center. Brockport, Cortland, Geneseo, New Paltz, St. Lawrence, Union and Ithaca will join the Herons in the two-day tournament.

New Paltz, the 2002 SUNYAC Champion, Union and William Smith will be the top competitors in the tournament. There will be three flights for singles with 16 player draws in each and three flights for doubles with 16 teams in each draw.

Among the favorites in the A bracket is top seed Laurie Dorsheid from Cortland and No. 2 seed William Smith first-year Karen Newbury (Maine Endwell/Johnson City, N.Y.). The third seed is Sophie Great from New Paltz, while Ithaca's Jen Beekman sits in the fourth spot.

In the B singles flight is top seed William Smith sophomore Laura Maier (Lancaster Day School/Reading, Pa.), No. 2 seed Laura Farrell from New Paltz, third seed Liz Kelly from St. Lawrence, and another representative of the Herons in the fourth seed, first-year Laura Rothe (Ursuline Academy/Kennet Square, Pa.).

William Smith senior Kelly Randall (Pittsford-Mendon/Pittsford, N.Y.) holds the first seed in the C singles flight, while Jennifer Neumann of New Paltz, Shalini Sudarsanan of Geneseo and the Saints' Meg Tiernan are the second through the fourth seeds, respectively.

For the doubles A flight the duo of Newbury/Patterson hold down the third seed, while in the B flight Maier/Rothe are representing the Herons as the second seed and Cordes/Randall seeded first in the C flight.

The tournament will begin play on April 26, at 9 a.m. Results will be available throughout the weekend online at: web.hws.edu/herons/tennis.
