April 15, 2002

CANTON, N.Y.--The William Smith tennis team played its strongest tournament of the spring this weekend at the St. Lawrence University Tennis Invitational. The Herons won all three doubles flights, while sophomore Diana Harmann (St. Joseph's/Southport, Conn.) captured the B singles bracket.

In A doubles, the second-seeded pair of first-years Crystal Cordes (Mountain View/Mesa, Ariz.) and Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) were 2-0 including an 8-2 decision over Ithaca's Meghan Carroll and Jen Beekman in the final.

Sophomore Kelly Randall (Pittsford Mendon/Pittsford, N.Y.) and senior Lisa Yaguchi (Wilton/Wilton, Conn.) swept through B doubles, defeating Nazareth's Mary Moore and Robin Medina 8-6 in the championship.

Harmann and first-year Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Golden Flyers Carly Slaughter and Elizabeth Chelus in the C final.

Harmann posted three singles wins to grab the B title, defeating fellow Heron Randall 6-3, 6-3. Harmann breezed by St. Lawrence's Abby Martin and No. 2 seed Bomber Suzanne Nguyen to reach the final. Randall edged Nazareth's top-seeded Andrea Gaddis and St. Lawrence's Lara Kimble, before bowing to Harmann.

In consolation singles, William Smith posted a 5-1 record. Cordes, Yaguchi, Maier, and first-year Amanda Bernard (Syosset/Jericho, N.Y.) each posted victories, while Patterson was 1-1.

The Herons wrap up the season April 20-21, when they host the William Smith Tournament.
