GENEVA, N.Y.—Sporting a 14-5 record for the 2002-03 season, the William Smith College tennis team recently received regional recognition in the latest collegiate tennis rankings administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Herons jumped into the 18th spot after matching the school record for wins in a season. Amherst College tops the poll, while UCAA foes, Vassar and Skidmore come in at fifth and 12th, respectively.

Closing out the season by claiming three of the six championship draws at the William Smith Tournament, William Smith finished in a tie for third at the NYSWCAA Championships and earned fourth place at the UCAA Championships in the fall.

The Herons were outstanding in the spring, posting an 8-2 record, helping Head Coach Chip Fishback to a 57-30 career record. His 11.4 wins per season are the highest by a Heron leader since the program began in 1970.

Playing in the third and fifth spots, sophomore Laura Maier (Lancaster Day School/Reading, Pa.) garnered a 19-4 record, including a runner-up finish in the B flight singles draw of the William Smith tournament this past weekend. Senior Kelly Randall (Pittsford-Mendon/Pittsford, N.Y.) had a strong final season with a 20-7 overall record at the fourth and sixth positions and garnering a victory in the C flight of the William Smith Tournament.
