Host Herons capture 4 titles in tennis tourney

GENEVA, N.Y.-- The William Smith College tennis team hosted its annual tournament this weekend, capturing the B and C Flight Championships in both singles and doubles play.

The B Flight singles final was an all-Heron showdown as top-seeded sophomore Diana Harmann (St. Joseph's/Southport, Conn.) defeated No. 2 junior Kelly Randall (Pittsford Mendon/Pittsford, N.Y.), 6-0, 6-2. No. 1 seed William Smith first-year Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.) defeated Union College's Sarah Boston, 3-6, 6-1, 10-4, for the C Flight title. Top-seeded Lauren Stellato of Union defeated No. 3 Meghan Carroll of Ithaca College, 6-1, 6-1, for the A Flight championship.

In doubles play, the Heron's top-seeded pair of Randall and senior captain Lisa Yaguchi (Wilton/Wilton, Conn.) overpowered Ithaca's Emma Jones and Suzanne Nguyen in the B Flight final. In the C Flight championship, William Smith No. 1 seed Harmann and Maier blanked Union's Boston and Megan Hyde, 8-0, for the title. SUNY-Cortland's unranked pair of Kristen Grosso and Stephany Kranz knocked off the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 seeds to win the A Flight crown. The Red Dragons downed Union's Dara Brumberger and Stellato, 8-6, in the final.

In consolation singles action, Grosso won the A Flight, while Dutchwomen Brumberger and Hyde won the B and C Flights, respectively.

Brockport, Cortland, Geneseo, Ithaca, St. Lawrence, Union, and William Smith competed in the two day tournament. The Herons closed the season with a team match record of 14-3, tying the single-season school mark for wins set in 1992.
