GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College tennis team hosted its annual tournament on April 26-27, and claimed three of the six championship draws, including the A flight singles and doubles titles. First-year Karen Newbury (Maine-Endwell/Johnson City, N.Y.) defeated teammate sophomore Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) for the A flight crown, while the pair teamed up to win the A flight doubles championship.

All of Saturday’s singles play used pro set scoring due to rain that forced all of the day’s action inside the Robert A. Bristol ’31 Field House. The rain also forced the cancellation of the planned consolation brackets in each of the six flights.

Patterson advanced to the A flight final of the 16-player draw thanks to a quarterfinal upset of top-seeded Cortland first-year Laurie Dorscheid (Fairport/Rochester, N.Y.), 8-5. Newbury, the bracket’s No. 2 seed, cruised to the final with consecutive 8-0 wins on Saturday, and a straight set victory in Sunday’s semifinal. The championship more than made up for the lack of earlier round drama.

Newbury eked out a 7-6 win in the first set, but dropped the second 6-3. She rebounded in the tiebreaker, winning convincingly, 10-3.

Newbury and Patterson captured the A flight doubles draw with an 8-5 win over Cortland’s Dorscheid and senior Kris Grosso (Deer Park/Deer Park, N.Y.)

The Herons also posted a championship in the C flight singles draw when senior Kelly Randall (Pittsford-Mendon/Pittsford, N.Y.) posted a gutty comeback win over New Paltz State’s first-year Jennifer Neumann (Minisink Valley/Port Jervis, N.Y.), 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.

In the B flight singles draw, New Paltz State sophomore Kerry Farrell (South Shore/Rockville Center, N.Y.) topped Heron sophomore Laura Maier (Lancaster Day School/Reading, Pa.) 6-3, 6-2.

Union College’s Megann Denefrio (Saddle River Day School/Blauvelt, N.Y.) and Jen Lauroesch (Wlat Whitman/Bethesda, Md.) won the B flight doubles championship with an 8-2 decision over St. Lawrence University’s Elizabeth Jenkins (St. Mark’s School/Lake Forest Ill.) and Maddie Rappoli (Holderness School/Rockport, Mass.).

New Paltz State’s Amie Larson (Port Jervis/Port Jervis, N.Y.) and Jessica Smith (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/Newport News, Va.) won the C flight by default.

More than 50 tennis players from colleges across New York State participated in the annual tournament.
