September 23, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--The University of Rochester women's tennis team, led by junior All-American Joanna Toke (Rochester, N.Y.), secured both the singles and doubles championships of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northeast Region Tournament this weekend. William Smith College hosted the annual event, which featured more than 70 student-athletes from 16 colleges and universities.

Toke's straight sets victory (6-1, 6-1) over Union College's Lauren Stellato (Friends Academy/Old Westbury, N.Y.) completed a run through the singles championship draw that saw her lose only one set and just 12 games in six matches. The runner up in the 2001 NCAA Division III Singles Championship was the weekend's top seed. Stellato, the No. 2 seed, reached the finals in equally impressive fashion, posting five consecutive straight sets wins before falling to Toke.

In the doubles championship draw, Toke teamed up with senior Rachel Sandler (Skokie, Ill.) to defeat the Hamilton College duo of junior Lindsey Schantz (Sharon/Sharon, Mass.) and Ana Venturas (The Hackley School/Bronxville, N.Y.) 8-4

. Vassar College's first-year Kristen Johannessen (Bedford/Bedford, Mass.) prevailed in the consolation singles draw with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over sophomore Heather Fuleihan (Manlius Pebble Hill/Syracuse, N.Y.) of Skidmore College.

For William Smith, the doubles team of sophomore Brighde Dougherty (Manasquan/Sea Girt, N.J.) and first-year Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) posted three victories to reach the quarterfinals of the doubles championship draw. The duo entered the field seeded sixth. In the singles championship draw, four Herons, including Dougherty and Patterson, reached the second round, before falling to the opposition.
