Patterson reaches ITA Northeast Round of 16; Newbury wins consolation singles draw
September 28, 2003 Sophomore Karen Newbury (Maine-Endwell/Johnson City, N.Y.) lost her opening round match to the tournament's seventh seed, but rebounded to win five consecutive matches and the consolation singles bracket. Newbury defeated NYU's Erika Olson 8-2 in the finale. In the championship bracket, Patterson, who was the 12th seed, won her opening round match over St. Lawrence's Johnna Nigh, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6. Patterson was joined in the second round by classmate Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.), who defeated Nazareth's Robin Medina, 6-4, 6-1. Patterson escaped the round of 32 with another thrilling three set decision. This time toppling Vassar's Debbie Sharnik, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6. Maier also faced a Brewer, falling to fifth-seeded Diya Uberoi, 6-1, 6-0. Patterson's bid for a quarterfinal appearance was stopped by the College of New Jersey's Kristen Klepacki, the sixth seed, 6-1, 6-2. In doubles play, Maier and first-year Meghan Kelley (Norwell/Norwell, Mass.) reached the second round in the 32-team championship bracket with an 8-5 win over a pair from Geneseo. For the sixth consecutive year, the ITA Northeast Womens Championships were hosted by William Smith College.
