Tennis sweeps Geneseo in home opener September 24, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.--The William Smith tennis team made its home season debut this evening with a 9-0 victory over visiting Geneseo. The loss is the first of the season for the Blue Knights, who fall to 5-1, while the win improves the Herons to 2-1. Junior Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and sophomore Karen Newbury (Maine-Endwell/Johnson City, N.Y.) cruised to an 8-2 victory at first doubles, but their teammates at Nos. 2 and 3 needed to post come-from-behind wins. Junior Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.) and first-year Meghan Kelley (Norwell/Norwell, Mass.) railed from a set down, for a 9-7 victory at No. 2, while junior Sarah Coffin (St. George's School/Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and sophomore Kristin Dowling (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia, N.Y.) came all the way back from a 7-4 deficit for a 9-8 (7-0 in the tiebreaker) win. In singles play, Patterson, Newbury, Maier, and Coffin won in straight sets. At No. 4 singles, Kelley battled cramps in her calves and her hand to win a gutty 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 decision. First-year Heidi Ambrozaitis (Burr Burton/Manchester, Vt.) captured the final Heron point in the evening's longest match, defeating Rene Smith, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4). William Smith returns to action this weekend, Sept. 26-28, when the Herons play host for the sixth consecutive year for the ITA Northeast Championships. More than 70 student-athletes from 19 colleges and universities will participate in singles and doubles play. |
